Stillman Athletics
Chris Megginson

TUSCALOOSA – Stillman College head baseball coach Terrance Whittle has been named the Tigers’ new athletic director.

Whittle will replace Ken Alston, who was recently named associate athletic director at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. Whittle will continue in his role as Stillman’s head baseball coach.

Whittle has served as Stillman’s head baseball coach since the 2017-18 academic year. In addition to coaching, Whittle was involved in game management for Stillman home athletic events and assisted in athletic administration duties. He serves on the Southern States Athletic Conference’s Striving For Equality (SFE) Place Committee and will become Stillman’s Champions of Character liaison to the conference.

“I am grateful and humbled by the support and trust that has been shown in me by our President Dr. Cynthia Warrick and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Tyshawn Gardner in choosing me to steward the Stillman College Department of Athletics,” Whittle said. “Ken Alston established a dynamic culture under his leadership, and all who worked with him are better leaders and professionals because of it. It is my goal to continue building upon the legacy of my immediate predecessor and others who have come before me. I believe in transparency and cooperation, and I look forward to working with our coaches and all stakeholders of Stillman College athletics to provide the best possible experience for our student-athletes.”

Stillman College President Dr. Cynthia Warrick said SSAC Commissioner Mike Hall’s recommendation, along with Whittle’s engagement in campus activities and conference diversity and inclusion programs, made Whittle’s hire “an easy decision.”

“All of the conference members know him and think highly of his fairness to all sports and his demonstrated leadership skills,” Warrick said.

Alston’s departure comes after four years as athletic director. During his tenure, he oversaw Stillman’s transition to the Southern States Athletic Conference and helped grow the athletic department with the hiring of additional staff, reestablishment of men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs, and planning for future sports additions. He served as chair of the Southern States’ SFE Place Committee, as well as various committees on campus.

“I am very excited to see Coach Whittle in his new role, one that he has already grown into,” Alston said. “The Stillman College Athletic department is in more than capable hands. Though it saddens me to leave, I’m extremely happy and thrilled to see AD Whittle become the amazing administrator I know he will be.”

Stillman College President Dr. Cynthia Warrick said she’s excited for Alston’s opportunity at St. Xavier.

“[Alston] provided the leadership for transitioning to the Southern States Athletics Conference and was recognized by the Conference and his peers for his commitment to student-athletes,” Warrick said. “He will be missed.”

Prior to joining the Stillman College staff in 2017, Whittle spent 16 seasons as head coach at Elizabeth City State University. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Virginia State University. During his time in NCAA Division II, he served a decade on the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Advisory Selection Committee, including chair in 2008. He served five years on the NCAA Division II National Baseball Committee and was president of the CIAA Baseball Coaches Association from 2001-2005. In addition to college coaching, Whittle served as envoy coach for Major League Baseball International from 2002-2010, helping scout South Africa’s first World Baseball Classic and Olympics participant team, also serving as a technical advisor to the Nigerian national team during the All-Africa games. In January 2004, Major League Baseball International presented Whittle with the Julio Puente Envoy Coach of the Year Award. He also spent time coaching in Germany in 1999.

A native of Petersburg, Virginia, Whittle attended Chowan University – then Chowan College – before transferring to Virginia State and earning his degree in 1994. He received a master’s in education at Cambridge College. He has three children: Jamila, 28; Bilal, 21; and Shari’ah, 18.

SSAC Commissioner Mike Hall is pleased to see Stillman’s athletic director transition remain within the college to continue the program’s growth.

“Terrence Whittle is the perfect person to move the athletics department forward,” Hall said. “He has seen Ken’s work and is very experienced as a coach. He has many of the same qualities [Alston]: humble, organized and wants to see Stillman flourish moving forward. It speaks well of Ken and Dr. Warrick to promote from within with very little disruption to the overall administrative work for the department.”

Stillman College will begin its 2021-2022 athletic calendar Sept. 3 with the beginning of the 2021 men’s and women’s cross country season.

Stillman College, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a historical black college and university (HBCU). It is in its sixth year of membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and competes in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC).

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Livingston University football team’s national championship, the entire team will be inducted into the University of West Alabama Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 16.

The event will be the first in a revamped UWA Athletics Hall of Fame induction celebration ceremony that gets underway with a Hall of Fame Breakfast at 8:15 a.m. at the Bell Conference Center on UWA Campus. The team and the other hall of fame inductees will also be honored later that day at the Tiger football game against conference rival Valdosta State.

The 1971 team has 13 players and coaches already inducted into the UWA Hall of Fame: Head Coach Micky Andrews, Steve Davis, Tony Holmes, Ken Hutcherson, Robbie James, Coach Jim King, Larry Lightfoot, Herbie Malone, Coach Buddy Nix, Jerry Pitts, Clemit Spruiell, Nels Strickland and Leo Wright.

“I can think of no better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our 1971 football national champions than to induct them into our Hall of Fame as a team,” UWA Director of Athletics <dfn>Kent Partridge</dfn> said. “In addition to being our only national championship team, their contributions to UWA both as a team and as individuals over the last 50 years can’t adequately be put into words.”

The 1971 Tigers posted an 11-1 record and claimed the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics by defeating top-ranked Arkansas Tech, 14-12, in the national championship game at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.

On the way to the championship, the Tigers beat West Liberty 25-2 in a semifinal game in Steubenville, Ohio.

In addition to taking home the championship trophy, several coaches and team members received major honors during that season. Andrews was named Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year and NAIA District 27 Coach of the Year.

As a senior quarterback in 1971, Clemit Spruiell was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year and was a second-team NAIA All-American. He passed for 1,281 yards and nine touchdowns while rushing for 229 and five scores. He led the team with 1,509 yards of total offense.

Middle linebacker Nels Strickland was a first-team All-American and was named the most valuable defensive player in the title game for his 15 tackles, seven assists, and one interception. Strickland was the first West Alabama athlete to be named First Team All-American.

Ken Hutcherson was a starting outside linebacker for the Tiger’s 1971 NAIA National Championship team and a two-time All-American.

Spruiell, Adrian Gant, Larry Lightfoot, Herbie Malone, and Strickland were first-team All-GSC selections. Lightfoot set a school record with 74 points scored.

Tommy Hoffman, Malone, and Jim Berryman were honorable mention All-American.

Andy Coats was named GSC player of the week for his efforts against Jacksonville State on Sept. 11, while Spruiell earned the same honor for his play against Florence State (UNA) on Oct. 31. Malone was GSC player of the week for his efforts against Delta State on Dec. 6.

Spruiell and Lightfoot earned first team All-Alabama Small College offensive honors, while Gant, Malone, and Strickland were first team defensive choices. Leo Wright, Eddie Blake, Berryman, and Sam McCorkle were named to the All-Alabama Small College second-team offense, along with Barry Bledsoe and Hoffman, whose six interceptions led the team on the defensive side of the ball. Jimmy Duncan, Hutcherson, Tommy Cartwright, and Coats were honorable mention choices.

Lightfoot, who would eventually be drafted by the New York Jets, led the team in rushing with 458 yards and 10 touchdowns despite not being a starter at running back until the fourth game. Cartwright was the teams’ leading receiver with 30 catches for 374 yards and two TDs. Wright averaged 21.9 yards on 14 kickoff returns.

NCAA Communications
Greg Johnston, Associate Director of Communications

INDIANAPOLIS – Auburn’s Helen Ulrich and Bill Taylor will each receive a $10,000 Jim McKay Scholarship, awarded by the NCAA to college athletes who demonstrate achievement in sports communication or public relations or hope to contribute to the field.

Ulrich, who competed in equestrian at Auburn, graduated with a degree in journalism this spring. Taylor, the long snapper for the Auburn football team, graduated with a degree in agricultural communications in December.

The McKay Scholarship recognizes a student-athlete’s outstanding academic achievements and potential to make major contributions to the sports communications industry. The scholarship was created in 2008 to honor pioneer sports journalist Jim McKay, and the recipients are selected by the NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship Committee.

Helen Ulrich

Ulrich has posted a 3.80 GPA during her undergraduate studies and was named to the Southeastern Conference academic honor roll from 2018 to 2021. She also earned academic honor roll honors from the National Collegiate Equestrian Association from 2019 to 2021. She helped Auburn win three consecutive conference championship and two national championships.

Ulrich has decided to return to Auburn for a fifth season of competition, which was a blanket waiver option for student-athletes after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled competition in March 2020.

In her application essay, Ulrich listed her short-term goals:

Leverage her academic and athletic success to provide the necessary financial and academic resources to help her secure a master’s in sports communications. She will begin work on her master’s degree at Auburn.

Gain a greater understanding of how the communications field can impact brand metrics, engage media and social media influencers and clearly deliver important messages in a multimedia-driven world.

Further her understanding and insights of corporate communications by securing internships with Fortune 500 companies and top public relations firms while pursuing her master’s degree.

Her long-term goal is to pursue a career in the public relations field with a company or companies that recognize and reward individuals who consistently improve their skills while leveraging their talent to make a meaningful and measurable impact on their business.

Ulrich, who grew up in Mooresville, North Carolina, wrote in her application essay that she learned the value of connecting with others early in life.

“I learned that if I was going to succeed at highest levels both academically and athletically, hard work was essential. But my ability to clearly communicate with my coaches, teachers, teammates and family would help me simplify complex challenges and achieve my goals.”

Bill Taylor

Taylor, Auburn’s long snapper the past three seasons, posted a 3.59 GPA while earning his undergraduate degree. He earned SEC academic honor roll honors from 2017 to 2019.

Taylor also was a member of his campus and SEC Student-Athlete Advisory Committees during his time at Auburn.

Taylor, who is from Northport, Alabama, plans to pursue a master’s degree in agricultural leadership.

During his youth, Taylor spent time on his father’s catfish farm. It led to his passion for working in agricultural communications. In his application essay, Taylor said he composed an analysis comparing conventional and organic agriculture. He attended the Alabama Agriculture Expedition trip during spring break of 2020 to visit farms and hear concerns from farmers throughout the state.

Last summer, Taylor interned at the Alabama Farmers Federation in the governmental and agricultural programs department to learn more about agriculture policy and communication initiatives.

Taylor’s long-term goal is to work in agricultural lobbying or for a government agency involved in agriculture.

He hopes to bridge any knowledge gaps for those outside and within the agricultural community.

In his application essay, Taylor wrote, “I hope my work will contribute to sustainable food systems through analyzing ways in which the agriculture industry could improve its public image by utilizing more communication channels. I want to refine my knowledge of our food system and gain experience in solving current issues that require diligence and teamwork.”

Davey O’Brien Foundation

FORT WORTH – Alabama junior Mac Jones has been named the 2020 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award winner. He is the first Crimson Tide player ever to claim the nation’s oldest and most prestigious quarterback trophy.

On the year, Jones has completed 275 of 357 passes for 4,036 yards and 36 touchdowns against just four interceptions. His completion percentage (.770), passing efficiency rating (203.0) and total quarterback rating (95.8) are the highest in NCAA history.

In addition to topping the nation in completion percentage, passing efficiency and total quarterback rating, his passing yardage and passing touchdown totals rank second in the NCAA. He also is third nationally in points responsible for (222) and sixth in total offense per game (336.6).

In 12 games, Jones has thrown for more than 300 yards seven times, eclipsing the 400-yard plateau on four occasions. The native of Jacksonville, Fla., also threw four or more touchdown passes seven times.

The No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide own a 12-0 record and have reached the College Football Playoff Championship Game. In his past two contests, the SEC Championship Game against Florida and national semifinal versus Notre Dame, Jones combined to complete 58 of 73 pass attempts (79.4 percent) for 715 yards and nine touchdowns.

In 2020, the 6-3, 214-pound quarterback has directed one of the nation’s most prolific offenses. The Crimson Tide rank second in the FBS in scoring offense (48.2 points per game), fifth in passing offense (349.3) and sixth in total offense (535.0).

Including Jones, over the past 13 years, the Davey O’Brien Award winners’ teams have combined for an overall record of 164-14 (.921). He is the sixth straight winner to lead his team to the College Football Playoffs, joining Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (2014), Clemson’s Deshaun Watson (2015, 2016), Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield (2017), Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray (2018) and LSU’s Joe Burrow (2019). Three winners in the past seven years ultimately claimed national championships (Florida State’s Jameis Winston in 2013, Watson in 2016 and Burrow in 2019).

Clemson junior Trevor Lawrence and Florida senior Kyle Trask were award finalists alongside Jones. Ballots were tabulated from the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, which includes select media members and all former winners, following the voting period’s conclusion on Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. (CT).

Bonus ballots were added based on social media fan votes recorded on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Jones won first place in the Facebook vote, while Trask claimed the most votes on Instagram and Twitter.

Jones was named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award winner live on the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. Due to ongoing issues with the COVID-19 pandemic that has forced the cancellation of the 44th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner, Jones will be honored virtually on Monday, Feb. 15.

Release

MOBILE – Historically Black College and University (HBCU) football is coming back to the Mobile area even earlier in 2021. The Gulf Coast Challenge will present the Ultimate HBCU Experience, taking place at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at 4 p.m., featuring the Savannah State University Tigers versus the University of West Alabama Tigers.

Due to the cancelation of the fall 2020 game because of the pandemic, this is the first time a game of this caliber has been held during the spring season and this highly anticipated clash of the Tigers is welcomed by both universities’ head coaches.

“We’re ecstatic to have the opportunity to play in the Gulf Coast Challenge against an elite opponent in West Alabama,” Savannah State Head Football Coach Shawn Quinn said. “The Gulf South Conference is the premier league in NCAA Division II football, and we’re excited to test our squad against such a formidable opponent in the wonderful city of Mobile. We’re excited for Tiger Nation to be able to come and be part of this awesome bowl-like atmosphere.”

“We are very excited as a program to be invited to play in the Gulf Coast Challenge. It will be a great opportunity to showcase our university in the city of Mobile and beyond,” UWA Head Football Coach <dfn>Brett Gilliland</dfn> said. “Most of all, we look forward to playing the game against a high-quality opponent.”

With this being the Gulf Coast Challenge’s third annual event, Executive Director Timothy Hale Jr. remains steadfast on its mission, saying “We are committed to providing quality football to the city of Mobile and surrounding communities while emphasizing the importance of achieving higher education through esteemed historically black colleges and universities.”

“As we safely move forward with our 2021 calendar, we’re excited to be hosting this unique event in Mobile – a regular season spring college football game. In 2016, the Mobile Sports Authority helped to bring HBCU football back to Mobile after a seven-year absence,” Mobile Sports Authority Executive Director Danny Corte said. “So, hosting this spring GCC game after the fall game was postponed continues that mission. The Savannah State/West Alabama matchup is intriguing since this will be the first time these two teams have met on the gridiron.”
